i think the RIAA is making a lot of noise. Or we simply give it too much attention.
I'm not sure how much they can try to dictate today :)
Internet, “It treats censorship as damage, and routes around it!” - That was good :)

Please, someone, do me a favor. Buy a bomb and murder the RIAA. Honestly, I would pay $10 to have someone send constant death threats to those jerks. I would also like it if someone would light a match and burn the RIAA to death.

The problem is, in certain countries like the USA bypassing the copy protection of a CD/DVD/A N Other peice of media you own is against the law; DMCA here in the UK we get the VERY anti-open source Computer Misuse Act.

My personal attitude is that this is what people wanted. Us geeks have been yelling about the antics of organisations like the RIAA, we told you DRM was bad.

Silly geeks. We didn't know what we were talking about.

Enjoy your license to use and devices which will, eventually (and no that's not wishful thinking, they really are comming) that will report back what your doing with them.

For sure I'm boycotting the RiAA. Thanks for the heads up on CDBaby, it seems to be chock full of independent music talent. There are so many legal free downloads available outside of the clutches of the RiAA. I get free mp3s from sites like Blogothèque and Foxtunes, quality legal independent music.

Eric: I have noticed that after the initial surge of CDs with the crippling encryption on them, a number of labels seemed to back away from it (probably due to intensely negative consumer reaction). For a little while I couldn't get new CDs to play in my car, and now most of them do (with one or two exceptions).

It is true that Windows Media Player rips CDs without any apparent trouble, although I do occasionally hear about people still having trouble with some discs. And yes, Linux is an excellent way of getting around crap like that.

Ann:
Maybe I have not been buying CDs which have crippling restrictions built into them. Maybe it is because I run Linux systems. Whichever: I have never had any trouble either playing, or ripping my music to make the Dreaded MP3 Files....
It is my strong belief that if a disk were released which made it impossible to play on a Linux box, a workaround would be available within 24 hours; such is the might of the open-source system. As is said of the Internet, "It treats censorship as damage, and routes around it!"
But it will be Interesting to watch the RIAA and its stooges try to get previous Supreme Court decisions regarding Fair Use overturned...
