Oh, c'mon, Bill. Last time I checked, politicians were elected, not appointed by corporations and special interest groups.

But the whole Seattle thing was a thuggish debacle that made me ashamed to be an American. The Seattle police overreacted, possibly out of fear that the large attendance of protesters would become a mass riot (which did not happen), and indiscriminately assaulted large numbers of peaceful people.

I'm not convinced that the WTO is a good idea, but peaceful protesters who are not otherwise breaking the law should not be assaulted by the police, period. I've read that local residents were also sometimes cuaght up in these activities, which is just stupid.

I'm sure you noticed while watching the debate last night that the only "breaking of the rules" was done by Shrub, in his repeated insistence to respond with his stammering defenses of his indefensible positions. And the rules - 32 pages of incredible minutiae regarding the conduct of the debaters and the "warm supporters" of the candidates that were allowed to attend - what incredible bunk. But overall, it was an excellent opportunity for Kerry to explain his positions more clearly, and the real George Bush was revealed. The anger and discomfort he displayed over having his seat of the pants decisions questioned was telling - but rest assured he will stick to them "come do or die" (but that would be some other life on the line, not his...)

Politicians serve at the whim of the people? That's odd, I could have sworn the last ten years were marked by politicians siccing the cops on anyone who doesn't conform to legislation passed to serve special interest groups and big business. I was in Seattle in 1999.

If you meant that Politicians *should* serve at the whim of the people, then I'm right there with you. But there's a lot of work to be done before that becomes reality.
