I think my husband just revealed how much a San Jose native he is. :) That was not a lot of rain. Silverthorne, CO seems to enjoy about an hour of rain during their daily afternoon thunderstorm. Sheridan, WY was approximately the same, and it did seem to me that the drought warning was appropriate. I expected it to be raining more or less continuously while we were there, which was not the case.

The drive out to Devil's Tower produced a curiously precise downpour that started about 10 minutes after we arrived and didn't let up until we drove out from underneath the storm cell.

As for the lack of traffic, I found it to be pretty much like the drives I've made through Tennessee, which has some very small towns in it (Sheridan's population is about 15,000), so I didn't find it especially unsettling. Nice, but not disturbing. :)
